Personal Narrative: Changing My Writing In My Classroom

Improved Essays
It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall. This bright, luminous light had come from none other than the room of my junior year English teacher, Mrs. Barnheiser. A smile came across my face as I reached for the door knob to enter the presence of my beloved teacher; a kind soul that changed my style of writing. It was at that moment that I recalled all the memories of the hardships and difficulties of the class that influenced me to become a better writer. …show more content…
Even now, as a college student, I do not find it to be enjoyable if I am inclined to write as a requirement for a class. Many times, I find the process of drafting 5 paragraphs with 3 body paragraphs compressed between an Intro and Conclusion to be tedious and burdensome, but over time I have learned to appreciate this process. Although slaving away to move my fingers across my keyboard to type several drafts takes time, it is helpful in the end to develop a well written paper. In the past, I would settle for an average of a C on all my essays because my writing style was plain and it lacked a sophisticated tone. This was due to my use of simple sentences and awkward word choices throughout my essays. It was not until I met Mrs. Barnheiser that my writing technique evolved. Having had the privilege of taking her class, she taught me the importance of using complex sentences and use of imagery and symbolism to make my writing more sophisticated and less basic; an idea that I had never crossed my mind prior to this

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I currently live in a small beach town right outside of Jupiter, Florida known as Hobe Sound. It’s a “drive by town” as I would describe it. There really isn’t anything there would attract or gravitate people to stay there; its better to just look at it out a car window well passing it. It is currently about six hours outside of Tallahassee, Florida. This seems really long, but originally I signed to go to University of Mississippi and later realized that being more than ten hours away from home was to much for me.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. A few simple plants, some with colorful flowers, are placed around the classroom. The seating arrangements include circular tables, with four-to-five students at each table, for work in groups.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

When I get to my AP Language class I look around the classroom that has a homey feel to it. Curtains drape over the cold foggy windows in royal red, rimmed with gold shimmering colors. A lamp is turned on, creating a soft glow in the room while the warm smell of pumpkin pie is enough to make it hell for a sleep deprived person to stay awake. I walk to the back of the classroom, and sit exactly in the middle. Then I put my head down, and wait for class to start.…

My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…

Coffey. Until the time of my senior English, the teachers I had before Coffey was not as zealous and exciting about writing like her. I believe that Coffey’s attitude about writing assignments we had to do was the reason why I fell back in love with writing. Unlike any other teacher, Coffey put all assignments into perspective and how the topic mattered to our lives. This technique of teaching or mindset changed why I wrote.…

When I first walked into this class, I knew I would have to write a lot. Coming from different English classes where I’ve written many papers before, I thought I would have an easy time in the class. Upon receiving the first writing assignment and getting the help I needed, I realized that the class was going to be a lot more work than I expected. Each assignment I received was a new start for me to improve my writing. My sentences were structured differently than they were in the beginning because of the grammar that we learned, concession and appositives.…
