Case Study: Rosa's Centre

Rosa’s Centre is an organization that offer day programs to adult from the age of 21 and above, such as learning how to read and write, how to socialize, how to use computers, encouragements in terms of personal hygiene, how to communicate with people and amongst their peers, and encouraging to exercise for healthy growth. This organization serves residents of peel region that is challenged by physical, intellectual, or developmental disabilities in order for them to achieve their independence, as they grow older. More importantly, to help them integrate into the society.

Especially, the population I am working with (People with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities) because I observed that they fear people in the position of power.
• Strengths Based Perspective: I practice using this theory by recognizing that the particular client I am working with gets too nervous and will tend to lose focus on whatever he is working on, even if he knows the answer. So, I always told him to feel free to tell me whenever need needed to take a break or I give him the break myself. I encourage him by using words like “you can do it, I believe you can do it, don’t be nervous, calm down, feel free to take a break when necessary, Hi five, you did it,” etc.
• Person-Centred Theory: with this particular client, I coordinate him when doing his numeracy sheet, readings and spellings; but I ensure that he completes the working himself at his own pace without been rushed. In addition, I focus on how well he does his work even if he did not get through all the sheets assigned for him to work on for the

I think that Rosa’s Centre is benefiting from the skills I have acquired as a student from Sheridan college by me implementing the programs designed to build on their skills and independent, as well as me adhering to the policies and procedures put in-place in case of any conflict or otherwise. I recognized that work need to be done the way Rosa’s Centre has designed their programs.

6. How are you as a student benefiting from the practicum experience?

I am benefiting a lot from doing my placement at Rosa’s Centre by having the opportunity to work one-to-one with clients with different disabilities, facilitate their game activities, etc. Also, I appreciate the positive environment the agency have developed in order to make us feel comfortable and welcomed. Further, I appreciate the free and flow opportunity the agency gave use to ask for help whenever we are stuck.
