Five Ethical Categories In Special Education

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me.
Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents:
• Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010).
• Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010).
• Respect the private nature of the special

• Collaborate with colleagues from other agencies to improve services and outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities (CEC, 2010).
• Collaborate with both general and special education professional colleagues as well as other personnel serving individuals with exceptionalities to improve outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities (CEC, 2010).
Responsibilities to the Community
• Understand how cultural diversity, family dynamics, gender, and community shape the lives of the individuals with whom they collaborate (NASET, 2007).
• Cooperate with community agencies in using resources and building comprehensive services in support of children with specials needs (NASET, 2007).
• Recognize and practice in ways that demonstrate respect for the cultural diversity within the school and community (CEC, 2010).
• Recognize that they are role models for children, youth, and the public (NASET, 2007).
Personal Development
• Knowledge and use of curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of all students (TSPC,

• Respect the inherent dignity and worth of the children with whom they work with (NASET, 2007). The ethical statements I choose are the ones that interesting me the most. “Intervene professionally when a colleague’s behavior is illegal, unethical, or detrimental to individuals with exceptionalities”(CEC, 2010). I find this ethic the hardest for me because there are times when the principal at my school is the one whose behavior is negatively affecting the students I work with. While something should be said every time there is a situation many time there is nothing due to the fact the principal is our only evaluator. In addition, all five of these areas are very important to any special education teacher. The teachers are responsible to building relationships with parents, community, students, and their colleagues. To do so you must trust and maintain a professional-partnership with these individuals. Through creating a respectful and collaborative environment teachers are encouraging learning for their students (CEC, 2010). All five areas are intertwining with each

The fifth CEC initial preparation standard is about instructional planning and strategies, which, like the fourth standard, is also under the focal theme: instructional pedagogy (Council for Exceptional Children, 2012). This standard requires initial-level special education teachers to learn to adapt and use instructional strategies, technology-based or not, according to students’ abilities, interests, learning environments, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and IEP or transition plans in order to improve students’ learning. I believe that the courses, SPED 5365 Instructional Processes with Exceptional Children and SPED 5366 Modification of Curriculum and Instruction for the Atypical Learner meet this standard.…

Hi Korynne, I like the way you list the strategies that can be used to affectively benefit exceptional children out of the seven which do you feel would be most beneficial and why? I personal liked the one about helping the child envision positive future careers. Encouraging the child by making connections between their strengths and careers that fit those strengths. As was stated in this week reading assignment many who label persons with a disability focus on that disability rather then building on their strengths, encouraging one to show their ability despite their disabilities is priceless because we all have something to offer no matter how…

Special education has many entities. It cannot be ignored because it involves many people from all different walks of life. It does not discriminate but when it appears, it must be handled properly. Special education laws have changed over the years and opportunities have been made available for teachers to continue to be in the know of the changes that have taken place. An interview was given to Mrs. Pauline Lilly to discuss the changes that have occurred during her time as the school psychologist/exceptional education coach.…

The last meeting, I was a part of was the achievement team meeting, it discusses the need for special Ed services. Upon request of the parents, the special Ed team will meet up with the teachers and discuss the student’s behavior and how their services may benefit the student. For instance, a student’s parents were asking for services because the student was not focusing in class and she was starting to add a long “a” in the beginning of her words. As the teacher was discussing the student’s educational performance they noted that she was scoring average for all her test and from an educational standpoint she could not receive services. Even though the student’s parents wanted speech and OT services to address the added “a” sound and attention deficit, they could not help because the student was progressing at an average rate.…

During my special education teacher observations I came to learn that you are helping many students with different struggles and abilities on the road of academic accomplishment. A special education teacher must learn to have various academic goals and instructional methods for students due to the fact that each student was different expectations or outcomes for academic success. It is crucial to remember that no two students are built the same academically and that students will have different strengths and academic ability…

My youngest son was diagnosed three years ago with having dysgraphia, detrimental ADD, and a social anxiety disorder. One of his teachers recognized the symptoms from experience with a previous student. Though she could not make recommendations, she did suggest we take him to the pediatrician, who then suggested a psychologist for testing. The tests confirmed that he did, indeed, have exceptions. To make a long story short, the school did not do what they were required to do by law and my son nearly failed the fifth grade.…

One main goal schools are focusing on now is, how to strengthen their services in order to accommodate every student especially those with disabilities. However, not all schools or districts use the same resources majority of the time it depends on what the student body make up consist of. In addition to that once in the schools there are multiple perspectives when it comes down to how services work regarding special education teachers and general classroom teachers. The field of Special Education is an exciting field to study. Within course SE7001-8: Assessment in Special Education, I have learned a new way of looking and approaching certain situations within the realm of special education. Through the research necessary for this course, it allowed me to gain knowledge and helped to prepare me mentally for the future of being a Director of Special Education and offered insight of how school personnel, administration, paraprofessionals, and various assessments work within the school system. The course provided me with a solid path and foundational view of how administrations work within a school district.…

When walking into a special education classroom, it is extremely rare to see only one adult. Traditionally, when individuals think about the classroom setting, they think of the desks, the books, the students, and the teacher. Not many picture a classroom as having multiple adults in the room. These individuals are coming in and out throughout the day each at a different pace and frequency. It is very hard to keep track of all of the professionals and the services that each student requires.…

When I am teaching, I must strive to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of my students. I should work with general education teachers to make special education a less resort and provide quality interventions that will help students experience success. I should work with the mindset that teaching will require teamwork and the only way that students will truly be given the help the needed is when teamwork takes place. I should be consistent in following through with accommodations on classroom instruction and during assessments. It is also important that I give students the amount of support they need and never give up until I find ways to reach…
