While drugs, violence, and gangs are big worries for parents, the most dangerous part of a teenager’s life is driving. Texting and handheld cell phone usage has been associated with car crashes. A teen driver is about four times more likely to be distracted by texting while driving than an adult. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers under the age of 25 are two to three times more likely than older drivers to send text messages or emails while driving. It is obvious that distractions while driving can lead to accidents. In 2011, at least 23% or 1.3 million auto collisions were a result of cell phone usage. Instant gratification is higher on teens priority list than cell phone safety. Car crashes are the leading cause of deaths among American teens. In the past five years about 6,000 America teens have died from car related collisions; that is about 18 teens a day. In the 2010 AT&T survey, texting while driving increased by 50% in one year. The University of Utah reported that when using their cell phone while driving, driver’s reaction rate decreases to that of a person whose Blood Alcohol Concentration is 0.08% above the legal limit. Car insurance companies have the same thing to say across the board, avoid distractions. Insurance companies have a higher premium for new drivers until they prove themselves with a consistent driving record. The reason for this is because teenage drivers are more likely to be involved in crashes than other drivers, and new drivers, in general, do not have experience dealing with high-risk driving situations, which leads to a higher chance of being in a collision. In 2010, the national average for car insurance was $1,566 for drivers between the ages of 18 and 25. Basically, car insurance companies want drivers to save their own lives and avoid high auto insurance premiums.
