First, I began by asking an opened ended question. However, the following question was closed ended. When I asked, “Did you feel sad last week?” I was attempting to have Mr. S disclose his past feelings, because I had remembered that his mother stated he was sad. Instead, I could have asked “How did you feel last week?” This open ended questions could have led to a deeper discussion.
I sought clarification when Mr. S stated, “there will have to be changes made when I go back home again.” However, asking for an explanation using “why” was not therapeutic because it could make the ct. become defensive. I could have rephrased the question without using the word “why.”
When the ct. disclosed his past suicidal ideation, I immediately asked in a direct manner if Mr. S wanted to kill himself. When Mr. S disclosed information about his “guardian angels,” I encouraged him to describe of hallucination. I also restated what the ct. said previously about coping mechanisms, and I offered self by offering to play the ct.’s card game. The goal was met during this interaction because the ct. disclosed his past feelings and disclosed past suicidal
