Open End Counseling Questions

Decent Essays
I have notice that you provided many open ended questions to get the client to talk more. I found you’re the probing questions very interesting. You were able to seek out what the client was ready to discuss at that moment in counseling. As I see it, you were able to keep the client focus on their issue. I thought the way you were able to ask the client about the things in her life that was causing her anxiety to be very effective. I think you was kind of nervous, but you did a very good job. I believe paying attention to your body movement during a counseling session would be a big help. We as counselors, don’t want the client to see if we are nervous. We don’t want them thinking we might be incompetent. However, you were able to make progress

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

What do I think I could have done better? I should have been more confident because I did prepare for this speech as much as I could have. My anxiety was at an all-time high with this speech because I suffer from post concussive disorder, this effects my ability to read and my short term memory. I almost gave up and asked for more time because of my disability which is something that I have never done before. However, my pride wouldn’t let me do it…

During each session, she would start by asking if there any issues we would like to discuss and end each session by asking if we needed any information for our next day at our sites. The doctoral student also gave useful information about counseling. She shared her experiences of counseling and allowed us to explore who we were as a professional. She presented herself in a calm and non-intimidating manner. I presented two audio recordings in which she gave appropriate feedback and suggestions.…

For this assignment, I interviewed Felicia Low, a Program Advisor at the School of Public Health. This interview taught me a lot about myself and my interpersonal communication skills when it comes to communication on a one-on-one basis. Prior to the interview, I was a bit nervous since I did not know Mrs. Low personally and never communicated with her face-to-face. I prepared to conduct the interview in a way that it would feel like a normal conversation and not a regular interview. For example, I would not always say things from the interview questions that I prepared, I would sometimes ask a question on piece of information that she would share.…

Despite my discomfort, I think I did a good job maintaining an open posture throughout the interview. A major personal discovery I made was that I tend to be expressive in my face. I noticed that I was doing pressing my lips together and at some points my eyes widened. This was namely due to the uncomfortable areas of the interview such as Betty beginning to sing and the moments when she was highly upset. During those points of the interview, I felt as if I kind of lost some control over the flow of the interview.…

I wish I used less fillers and mazes and was more precise. Sometimes, I would use too much selective attention, for example I focused so much on the interviewee’s family relationships and reciprocal treatment, that I forgot to ask about her resentment for putting others first. I also could have questioned her coping skills regarding her family’s laxity. Whereas in interview one, I believe my strengths included providing great minimal encouragers, nodding my head, counselor congruence, and showing greater interest.…

What? When I first read the criteria for this semester long project I was imagining it to be busy work. After the first assignment I quickly realized it was more than that. This project and class showed me that medicine is not just how much biology, chemistry, or anatomy is known. Rather, in order to be the best possible health professional I need to be able to communicate with others. I found this project to be a precise description of reality, even though my client was my father and I had a personal relationship before the sessions started.…

This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. It is in this session that I helped the client to focus on the wider issues around the problem. This I achieved through challenging the client positively by asking him if he thought whether the situation would still have ended the same way it was if he did things differently. I also inquired whether he thought there were reasons that made the individual behave the way she did. These questions also allowed my client to express his emotions regarding the situation which would be helpful for him since he would be able to release the tension he had concerning the situations. This was through talking about the thoughts and the feelings he had stored in his mind.…
