Job Shadowing In Physical Therapy

Decent Essays
I chose to do my job shadowing at a physical therapy office called Northern Therapy and Rehabilitation in Stillwater, OK. While I was there I closely observed the physical therapist and the therapy technicians. They did not let me do much more than watch. While I observed, I tried to ask the therapist important questions about school, her everyday schedule, obstacles she faced, and why she wanted to go into this field. Although I tried my best to get a feel for the occupation and get to know the therapist, she was not very engaging. Her responses to my questions were very vague and she sounded annoyed with my every time I tried to ask about something. As my time at the office went on, I asked less and less questions because I felt as if I was being a burden. Even though this made my job shadowing experience tough, I kept going back and started asking the physical therapy technician questions because she was much nicer and more informative. …show more content…
I felt as if the technicians did most of the work with the active rehabilitation of the patients and then the actual physical therapist did the hands on rehabilitation. After patients were done with their workouts they would almost always lay on a table and let the physical therapist stretch them and check their progress. After the therapist was done, the technician would hook them up to stimulation and put ice or heat on their injured area. I did not realize that the physical therapist had to be so hands on with the patients and I did not realize that the physical therapy technicians did most of the exercise demonstrations with the

Children who struggle with a physical injury or disability often find they need extra help, and pediatric physical therapist assistants (PTAs) may be the ones to provide this help. A physical therapist assistant works under the guidance of a physical therapist to help child become independent when they suffer from a disability or physical injury. The therapist doesn't take on tasks for the child, but works with the child to show him or her a way they can tackle the job on their own, so they can become more independent and do more for themselves. The therapist assistant works with the child, the supervising therapist, his or her parents and other adults in the child's life to develop an individualized treatment plan, one that meets the unique needs of the child. Often, this therapy takes place in a school setting, thus school therapists are becoming more common.…

I would also set up and put up exercise equipment before and after patient’s appointments. But more often than not I loved my time here with Mountain Rehab, I was able to watch therapists set up and organize exercise prescriptions, evaluate patients on their first visit to asses a “plan of care” for the patient. All different types of modalities I had the privilege to watch and even take part in few of the lesser invasive ones. Something that the common student wouldn’t precieve they would learn or how crucial it is to working in a clinical setting is the interaction between the therapists and the assistants. Coworker interaction and teamwork of the liking is a huge part in delivering the best patient care because it optimizes time and allows every patient to be seen and treated in a given work…

o Structure and noise level - noise level at the facility should be low enough that the patient and therapist can still communicate easily. o Degree of interaction - this will be high due to the very hands on approach of the physical therapist towards the patient. The PT will be constantly interacting with them, whether it be through observation, talking, active assistance, or demonstrating the exercises to the patient. As time goes on, the patient's strength gains should lead to a slight decrease in the degree of interaction though it will still remain high for safety concerns. The interaction pattern for the patient will be extra-individual as he will be interacting with objects for…

Injuries are a natural thing in human nature. When breaking a bone, there is a specific person who specialize in these type of situations to go to for help. When seeking a career as a physical therapist, a person must carefully look into the responsibilities this will entail, the skills one must have to succeed, plus other important aspects such as working conditions, salary, and the future of the job; however, just as important is to carefully seek out the University Of Texas Pan-American (UTPA) which will best prepare one for this profession. The tasks and responsibilities of a physical therapist include Patient Assessment: “physical therapist must perform an initial assessment of a patient’s illness or trauma in order to determine what the best course of action will be to restore mobility, alleviate pain or prevent further deterioration. During the assessment, physical therapists evaluate a patient’s ambulation, balance, coordination and control, among other physical abilities”.…

People say that you only get one chance to make a first impression, and this class is helping towards that part of the profession I need to become good at. Building rapport with my patients is probably the biggest aspect to that process so my patients can begin to feel comfortable with me as we begin their treatment process. When patients come in for their initial appointments, I have to interview them about how their injury occurred. The questions, for the most part, are already written out for physical therapists, so the attending behavior skills are extremely important. If I am looking uninterested when they are explaining their injury, they might not give me all the details, which could greatly affect their treatment plan.…

Nurses are the backbones of any clinic or hospital sites. They provide health care in the best of their ability to help their patients but also be there for them as a person. Compassion and tolerance is key to being a nurse. There is no point of caring for other human beings especially those who are ill, if you can not be CARING. Nurses are just as important as any physician, just because they didn't earn a PhD, nurses are still just as helpful as any doctor in the medical field.…
