Fortunately, in a study published by The New England Journal of Medicine, it was found that smoking marijuana neutralizes the side effects encountered while being exposed to chemotherapy, by inhibiting nausea and vomiting which eventually lead to severe dehydration and weight loss. In a controlled, randomized, “double blind” experiment, twenty participants were given oral delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol(a compound found in marijuana). The results were astonishing, 14 of the 20 participants displayed no signs of nausea and vomiting. This is illustrated in, “Each patient was to serve as his own control to determine whether tetrahydrocannabinol had an antiemetic effect. Twenty-two patients entered the study, 20 of whom were evaluable. For all patients an antiemetic effect was observed in 14 of 20 tetrahydrocannabinol courses and in none of 22 placebo courses” (293). That is a striking 80% success rate in the neutralization of nausea and vomiting in patients studied. Therefore, marijuana can be advantageously used in conjunction with chemotherapy to neutralize its effects while improving treatment results by diminishing weight loss associated with vomiting. Nausea and vomiting can be an uncomfortable and devastating side effect to deal with while undergoing chemotherapy. Marijuana should be implemented in conjunction with chemotherapy…
