Medical marijuana (cannabis oil) is today’s hidden jewel for the treatment of side effects caused by chemotherapy, which is commonly used as a main treatment for cancer patients. Research has shown its effectiveness in combating the side effects of chemotherapies used to treat various cancers. A common side effect experienced while being subjected to chemotherapy is nausea and vomiting. In a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, “Anecdotal accounts suggested that smoking marihuana decreases the nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapeutic agents” ( N Engl J Med 293). Furthermore, loss of appetite is an additional side effect of chemotherapy generally dealt with by cancer patients. …show more content…
As can be seen in the study, “Increased food intake occurred more frequently with THC (P = 0.008) and was associated with the presence of a "high." Of 36 THC courses resulting in complete antiemetic responses, 32 were associated with a high” (N Engl J Med 302) thus improving the quality of life of a cancer patient. It is also important to note, Marijuana studies have shown promising antitumor effects. Beyond a shadow of doubt, medical marijuana is an effective treatment for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy; therefore, it should be a common practice in the life of people dealing with the weight of battling cancer.
For one thing, chemotherapy is one of the most generally used treatments to combat innumerable types of cancers. Unfortunately, chemotherapy does not come without a price. It has countless ill side effects, which can …show more content…
After treatment with THC, cancerous cells displayed signs of increased cell blockage (inhibiting tumor growth). In other words, THC specifically targets main components primarily responsible for tumor growth. As illustrated in, “Thus, endocannabinoids seem to act as selective inhibitors of growth factor–dependent breast and prostate cancer-cell proliferation” (547). Although results have been promising, medical marijuana’s benefits against anti tumor growth are still uncertain. Due to the findings discussed here, endocannabinoids should be a main focus in further studies involving medical marijuana’s therapeutic effects on cancer. In animal studies, cannabinoids were well tolerated and showed very diminutive signs of detrimental side effects. As stated, medical marijuana has shown promising signs antitumor effects in cancerous cells and should be further
