The marinol in marijuana acts as a temporary coating for the mucus layer which relieves the nausea. I have had personal experience with severe nausea. When I was a child I had a very sensitive gag reflex, meaning I threw up constantly. I went to the doctor multiple times and there was nothing that could subdue it for the longest time.
