Medical marijuana has been dated back to 2900 BC, when Emperor Fu Hsi referenced cannabis as a very popular medicine (Deitch, 2003). Medical marijuana was brought to Western Medicine in 1839 by W.B. O’Shaughnessy. O’Shaughnessy was a surgeon who learned of medical marijuana’s medicinal properties when he was working in India for the British East India Company. Based on the fact that medical marijuana has been around for thousands of years, it is safe to assume that medical marijuana is utilized and proven to have effective medicinal properties. The medicinal properties of medical marijuana come from the chemical components, cannabinoids. Cannabinoids, activate receptors in the central nervous system and the immune system. The effects of medical marijuana’s cannabinoids on the human body, are analgesic, anticonvulsant, and anti-inflammatory. A Schedule I drug is described as a drug with a high risk of abuse and has no current accepted medical usefulness (Cancer.gov, 2016). The presented research in this article has shown that medical marijuana has medical usefulness; some of which has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (Sirven, 2015).
