When people think of books 50 years ago, they think of the old, dusty books sitting on their grandmother’s bedside tables, and they may even think it boring; the classics, like Charlotte’s Web, or Animal Farm, but there is a book written around that time that is quite the contrary to all these stereotypes. The Outsiders is a novel written about 50 years ago that really makes you read between the lines, the most important example of this being the outburst of poetry from Ponyboy when he and Johnny were at the church. “‘Too bad it couldn’t stay like that all the time.’ ‘Nothing gold can stay.’ I was remembering a poem I’d read once. ‘What?’ ‘Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.’’” Some readers may brush it off thinking that it was an unimportant and random piece of the novel, but this is not true. The Outsiders and the poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost are alike in many ways. One way that the book relates to the poem like this is with the line “Then leaf subsides to leaf.” This line means that leaves give way to yet more leaves and suggests a sigh of disappointment as the leaves don’t become flowers but simply more leaves.
