Over the years of the Olympics winning times for the 200 meter breaststroke between the men and women seem to both decrease without an increase or minimal variation between times. This type of behavior can be explained by the law of diminishing returns. The law of diminishing returns is as stated, “When an input is increased … while all others are held constant, the resulting increase in production will become larger and larger until the point of diminishing returns. After the point of diminishing returns, the increase in production becomes smaller and smaller” (Graser). At the beginning of something such as the Olympics there is not as much data to be compared to, there is only improvement to be made. After so many of years of the same event there comes a point where improvement can be made but at a slower pace. For example, the women’s 200 meter breast stroke before 1988 is either decreasing or possible increasing by from a range of 14.3 seconds to round three seconds. After 1988 the decrease in winning times varies from no more than two seconds and decreases about one second on average. The year 1988 would be considered the diminishing return because as the years continue on the winning time varies less and less and takes longer to improve. Winning times will continued to be broken are remain within close proximity of the limit at infinity. Improvements can also be continued to on the Olympic 50 meter pool, suits…
