What is Metabolism?
The totality of an organism's chemical reactions
How do Metabolic pathways begin?
They begin with a specific molecule, which is then altered in a sereis of defined steps to form a specific product
What are cataboilc pathways?
They release energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds
What is a major pathway of catabolism?
Cellular respiration, in which the sugar glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to carbon dioxide and water
Anabolic pathways
consume energy to build complicated molecules from simpler compounds (also called biosynthetic pathways)
How are anabolic pathways and catabolic pathways related?
The energy released by catabolic pathways can be stored and then used to drive anabolic pathways
What is the study of how organisms manage their energy resources?
Bioenergetics
What is energy and what are the types of energy?
Energy is the capacity to do work.

Kinetic Energy: energy of motion

Potential Energy: energy of location

Chemical Energy: form of potential energy sotred in molecules because of the arrangment of their atoms
