Why It Is Important To Be A Bystander

Decent Essays
A bystander can:
Alert an adult
Make it clear to your friends that you won’t be involved with the bullying behaviour
Never stand by and watch or encourage bullying behaviour
Do not harass, tease or spread gossip about others, this includes being online or not online
Never, forward or respond to photos, comments or messages that may be upsetting or offensive.
Support the person being bullied to ask for help. This may be going to a place with them where they can get help or providing information about where to go to get help.
Report it to someone at school who you trust such as the teacher or a school counsellor. If it is at work then you could report it to the manager or if the bullying is serious, report it to the police.

The main concepts I took away from the article, Social Determinants of Bystander Intervention in Emergencies, by Latane and Darley were, before an individual in an ambiguous situation can choose how to react, you must first define the situation, secondly, an individual can be lead (or mislead) to choose a certain course of action based on other people’s facial expression, discussion, or behavior, lastly, often times the social norm in the US is for males to act calm in a state of stress, often times creating “pluralistic ignorance”, in extreme cases, at the price of another person’s life. I use to work at a bar as a bouncer and have seen the consequences of pluralistic ignorance firsthand. A basic definition of “defining the situation” is, deciding how to act in any given social situation based on your thoughts, social norms, and other people’s…

Lizzie Gilmartin Green The Walking Boy Questions What prevents a bystander from participating in an act against another individual or group? There are multiple reasons for people intentionally avoid bullying, but the most common reasons are the fear of the consequences and getting caught, not agreeing with the actions, and feelings of sympathy for the victim.
