The main concepts I took away from the article, Social Determinants of Bystander Intervention in Emergencies, by Latane and Darley were, before an individual in an ambiguous situation can choose how to react, you must first define the situation, secondly, an individual can be lead (or mislead) to choose a certain course of action based on other people’s facial expression, discussion, or behavior, lastly, often times the social norm in the US is for males to act calm in a state of stress, often times creating “pluralistic ignorance”, in extreme cases, at the price of another person’s life. I use to work at a bar as a bouncer and have seen the consequences of pluralistic ignorance firsthand. As I am standing by the entrance, checking ID’s, I feel someone bump into me, with enough force that I knew they were either attempting to shove me, or had just shoved someone into me. I immediately turn around, I then realized it was the bartender, kicking someone out. I thought this was odd that the bartender was out from behind the bar, and knew something was up. A split second goes by and some idiot literally throws a barstool into the ceiling tile, a group of 3-4 men are standing, cussing each other out. I make eye contact with the other bouncer, he puts one man in a full nelson, I bear hug the man cussing, pick him up and waddle him out of the establishment as everyone in the bar starts to run. The entire staff came together and was able to prevent any further damage from being done. More importantly we were able to keep anyone from getting seriously injured. As Latane and Darley were talking about, the entire staff defined the situation as inappropriate, and were able to work together and defuse the situation
