A multitude of changes in demographics are causing workplaces to become a multicultural workplace. These changes directly affect how a workplace treats individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, races, ages, genders, disabilities, sexual orientation, and other basic factors of society. The U.S. has become an anomaly among traditional competitors such as China, Singapore, and Eastern Europe due to its 50 percent higher fertility rate within the economy.

Contingent workers are on the rise, and we are moving toward an increasingly temporary society in all aspects of life. Technology is considered just as temporary as employees. I strongly believe that technology increases are the main cause behind the “age of the disposable worker because technology is now taking the place of workers. Many workers are forced into an underemployment situations because corporations are laying off workers to be more cost effect now that machines can do the same work as an employee, but ten times as fast. The global economy has made it nearly impossible for employees to stay with an organization for any length of time. Organizations now rely on contingent workers in order to maintain low costs and flexibly. This highly competitive organizational environment has caused organizations to downsize or merge. The rapid growth in technology is a leading factor of downsizing in my opinion, because of the idea that organizations don’t have to pay machines or technology to work. Having one machine do the work of five employees is more cost effective, and maintenance for technology isn’t going to cost as much as it would be to hire multiple
