The continual change in the demographics of the workforce presents both obstacles and opportunites for managers and their organizations alike. It is important that managers are able to identify and prepare for constant changes in the workforce. Managers must research and study demographics in order to make appropriate adjustments dependent on the demographic they are managing. Increased diversity of the workforce requires that a succesful manger be able to cultivate his employess and help them to realize their full potential.
Changes in the social environment often result in challenges for managers. As organizations face both increases in older and younger workers managers may face increased cost due to training and compensation. Baby Boomers are often thought of as loyal employees that believe in staying with one company until retirement. On the other hand, Millennials grew up in a period of decreased job security and Millennials loyalties often lie more with themselves than the organization they work for. Millennials will often leave a firm if their needs for acceptance or personal growth are not met. Firms will have to face the fact that a large portion of their workforce, the Baby Boomers, will be retiring soon. Firms must learn to cultivate a working relationship between the generations in order to prepare for continued success after the departure of the Baby Boomers. The different generations working concurrently can generate problems and clashes requiring different management styles for each group.
