Communication: Communication will always be a critical part of the success of any organization. It becomes even more important when laws and mandates require specific actions take place to ensure all students with disabilities receive a free appropriate education. Communication is an area that SCHS needs to improve on. Teachers are not instructed on how to use the IEP goals for individual students. The EC staff is burdened with so much time-consuming paperwork which surrounds an IEP that compliance often takes precedent over being able to help teachers understand what the modifications mean and real life application to a given assignment. Often times it plays out that a teacher is not giving a student their expected modifications, a student and/or parent complains and the EC teacher then steps in and says to the regular ed teacher, “You are required by law to…” and the teacher’s behavior changes. Time is a factor in this weakness as well as being understaffed for the amount of students we serve.
