Compliance: SCHS does a great job in terms of compliance of the laws and mandates. This is evident from the interview with the Lead EC teacher who described the processes and procedures SCHS uses to ensure this. IEP records are not shared with anyone who is not directly in contact with these students. They stay locked in a closet and the EC teachers, principals, and guidance counselors are the only ones who have access to these outside of that closet. All teachers receive a full copy of the IEP with goals and modifications. Unfortunately many only look at the modifications.
Communication: Communication will always be a critical part of the success of any organization. It becomes even more important when laws and mandates require specific actions take place to ensure all students with disabilities receive a free appropriate education. Communication is an area that SCHS needs to improve on. Teachers are not instructed on how to use the IEP goals for individual students. The EC staff works hard to make sure these students are passing and finding ways to work with the teachers to help with assignment completion. 5th Period has helped

The EC staff is burdened with so much time-consuming paperwork which surrounds an IEP that compliance often takes precedent over being able to help teachers understand what the modifications mean and real life application to a given assignment. Often times it plays out that a teacher is not giving a student their expected modifications, a student and/or parent complains and the EC teacher then steps in and says to the regular ed teacher, “You are required by law to…” and the teacher’s behavior changes. Time is a factor in this weakness as well as being understaffed for the amount of students we serve.
