In addition to Mr. Smith, there are various leaders within the school available to support both teachers and students. Two primary support personnel are the instructional support teacher (IST) and the academic coach. The instructional support teacher supports teachers by examining student data and ensuring that interventions are in place within the classroom and school to support Tier 2 and 3 students.These supports range from reading and math support groups to classroom interventions. In addition to the IST, the academic coach provides support to teachers by providing help regarding curriculum and instructional matters. For example, if a teacher has recently transferred grade levels, that teacher can have the academic coach observe and mentor as the teacher familiarizes himself or herself with the new grade level. The academic coach provides assistance in many areas but primarily focuses on new academic programs such as Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Programs, data collection, and state-mandated testing. Currently, the Owen J Roberts School District offers a half-day kindergarten program to students who turn five (5) before September 5, of the current school year. Students enrolled in the Kindergarten program attend school during one out of two available sessions each day. The Kindergarten program is divided into an AM program (8:15-11:15) and a PM program (12:15-3:10). During each session, students are taught a curriculum that includes, balanced literacy, math, social studies, science, and related arts. Due to the amount of academic content to be covered and benchmarks that students are expected to reach, the Kindergarten program has additional personnel to support both teachers and students. West Vincent has a Kindergarten Language Arts and Math Support (KLAMS) teacher. This teacher is responsible for supporting students who do not meet academic benchmarks throughout the year. This teacher provides support to students in the general education classroom and also in a small group setting. In addition to the KLAMS teacher, students who are below benchmark also receive reading support with the Reading Specialist and the Language Arts and Math Support teacher. These three teachers support students who are at-risk and are not yet identified with a learning disability.
