This is a benefit to special education because it can now be assumed that the IEP decisions are correct and in the best interest of the child (student). Any none agreeable changes needs to be set forth by the parent or guardian that is opposed to it within the due process hearing, where they are responsible for proving that the schools IEP team does not have the best interest of the student in mind. This is often easily stated by the opposing party but not easily proven, but through this ruling that opposed party now has to ensure that they thoroughly follow through with collection of information disagreeing. This means that they will not only have to learn more about the things the school system is doing to assist the child (student) but also learn and discover better methods to assist the child (student) with their education process. Parents and teachers are invited to review her IEP and give any suggestions about her case, although Parents can agree or disagree on any decision and make changes with her placement. In Brianna’s case, her scores are getting better, although she is reaching her goals in a low pace she is giving effort to her studies every day. I think the process of developing and reviewing and IEP is just as equally significant as the actual legal document due to the fact that development and the review of the IEP is stated in the legal document. The legal document of the IEP states and list the student’s accommodations, special education services, strengths, weakness, and the student’s goals. Mrs. Taylor needs to remember the development of the review of an IEP is highly important, and that her views and thoughts of her student’s goals and needs are listed in the legal document of the IEP, which is how her student will receive his/her special education services. The overall mission of the IEP is to provide an plan that meets the unique needs of a child with a disability that allows them to reach goals and make progress in their academic career, and be able to be educated and participate with their non-disabled peers. One of the first steps in creating an IEP is to review eligibility for special educational services. There are 14 categories listed by the federal government and through data collected and assessment of the student the team must figure out which category the child is eligible for. While making changes to the text I implemented specific strategies suggested by the report. Those strategies include: distinguishing academic language from everyday vocabulary, contextualizing vocabulary instruction, and contextualizing through familiarity with genre and structure. What are the roles of each participant in the IEP team (include the student)? In the IEP video there was a cast of members present in the IEP meeting for Dominic. Some of the major roles of the meeting was the IEP team coordinator who was also the special education teacher of the school. The first step of an IEP is writing a students’ present level of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP). The academic achievement portion of the PLAAFP elaborates on academic skills that are mastered through school, whereas the functional performance statement will cover the improvement of a child’s ability to perform daily task, to include social skills. Some children will require both functional performance and academic achievement to evaluate equally; other children may need one criteria, of the two, to be more heavily evaluated depending on their disability, age and progress. To get parents involved in the IEP or transition process, first parents need to feel comfortable. Sometimes this may mean that the parents are not native to the English language. Communication needs to done in the parent’s native language. Interpreters can help make the parents feel comfortable, while also communicating the IEP or transition process to them. Education is important and extremely valued within American society, although students with disabilities have struggled with getting the opportunity to have the same fair, appropriate education as their nondisabled peers. In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) was enacted and public schools began to provide accommodations for students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) replaced the EHA in 1990, and it was designed to place more focus on the individual’s needs.
