The Physics of Basketball Basketball isn 't as easy as people depict it to be. Basketball physics is fairly irrelevant. Most people who study the physics of basketball get deep into the art of shooting, passing, and dribbling instead of actually playing the sport. There are many aspects to the physics of basketball. I have five aspects I would like to discuss. The shot, shooting a free throw and the spin. First I would like to talk about the game of basketball all around. Basketball was created James Naismith in 1891. Basketball is a team sport that requires two teams of five players that try to score by shooting a round ball through a hoop ten feet high. The game is played on a rectangular-shaped floor, this floor is called the court. At each end of the "court" there is a hoop with a net. The court is divided by two sections, in between is the mid-court line. The two sides divide the teams into two names offensive and defensive. The offensive team has ten seconds to get the ball over the mid-court line. If not in those ten seconds then the defensive team gets the ball. The ball gets down the court towards the basket by passing or dribbling. The team that has the ball at the time is the offense. The team that doesn 't have the ball at the time is the defense. The defense is required to steal the ball, contest shots, steal passes, deflect passes, and grab rebounds. A rebound is a missed shot grabbed by the defender or even the offender.
