Introduction Throughout the past two years, I have been taught the importance of using evidence-based practice (EBP) to implement the best possible interventions in order for my patients to achieve desirable outcomes. EBP emphasizes the need for redesigning health care that is effective, safe, and efficient for patients. Research in nursing is significant for further improvement of the patients that we are taking care of and it is essential to keep this in mind when we start our nursing career.
The way we went about identifying the topic we wanted to further research, was first of all by observation. During clinical many of the nurses, we worked with would discuss the issue of not really knowing when and if swab caps were being changed. This led us to the nurse manager for further investigation. We asked her what her thoughts were on the issue of swab cap changes and she said that this is an area they have been working on. For the past couple of years, they have been auditing central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) because they had a high rate of them on the unit and they wanted to be able to reduce infection rates. The nurse manager felt that the lack of communication and confusion amongst nurses as to when the swab caps, dressings, and tubing were last changed is one of the weakest areas on the unit.
