The Importance Of Evidence Based Practice

Improved Essays
The topic that I selected is increasing the evidence based practice use. Evidence based practice (EBP) is one of the popular topics in nursing today. It is defined as a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p. 2). Applying evidence based practice into our daily nursing practice can improve the quality of care of the patients. Likewise, it is a way of providing a high quality of care to patients that enhances the patients’ outcomes. Many nurses including myself support EBS because of the factual evidence and studies that shows improvement of delivery of patient care and …show more content…
Nursing today is mostly based on evidenced-based practice that is derived from previous research studies. As a nursing professional, I will follow and do what is right and the best interest of my patients. I believe that the use of EBS is imperative in nursing because it gives the best possible care for the patient. Evidenced Based Practice benefits not only the patients, but also the nursing staffs and organizations. Implementation of EBP can result to nurses’ satisfaction, increase cohesion, and turnover (Levin & Feldman, 2012). As a healthcare professional, an organizational budget is not what nurses would like to be reminded of before going to work. However, as each year passes, the focus has shifted to how much nurses can save lives as well as save money for the organization. This is the reason why EBP plays an important role in nursing because it is known to decreased hospital and healthcare cost (Levin & Feldman, …show more content…
To prepare myself for this project, I will use articles and journals from trustworthy websites using the Kaplan library. On my second week, I will gather more information about evidence based practice viewpoint and usefulness. I would also like to find methods on increasing the evidence based practice use in the clinical practice on my week three. Then I will find out the effectiveness of evidence based practice and how it improves patients’ outcome on my week four. On my fifth week, I will identify the strength and barriers when implementing EBP to ensure its effectiveness. On my sixth week I need to find a strategic plan to improve the adherence of EBP in the clinical settings. On my seventh week, I would like to study how education plays an important role when implementing evidenced-based practice, so the healthcare staff can continue to support the new thinking and ideas. On my eighth week, I will gather information about evidence based practice that has worked from the past. Lastly, I will summarize all my gathered information on my week ninth to finalize my poster

These EBP models include Funk’s Model of Research Dissemination, Stetler’s Model of Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice, DiCenso et al. Model, The Iowa Model, Rosswurm and Larrabee Model, The ARCC Model, and Kitson’s Framework. For instance: the first step in these models involves the identification of the problem in a clinical practice; next step is to conduct literature search, gather evidences from research, and compare it to current practice; then the decision is made…

According to Polit and Beck (2014), “evidence based practice, broadly defined, is the use of the best evidence in making patient care decision, and such evidence typically comes from research conducted by nurses and other health care professionals”. The nursing profession has been around for many decades and with many research and studies performed, it allows old practices to be revised and altered in order to provide better outcomes in patient care and safety. The ultimate goal in the medical field is to provide the best outcome for the patients. Conducting research, collecting data, and analyzing the results, allows revisions to be made in order to practice and provide quality care based on evidence. Additionally, EBP is done to ensure that a certain clinical question is answered based on multiple clinical trial results (Lewis, Heitkemper, Dirksen, & butcher, 2014).…

Evidence-based practice assisted me with evaluating primary research and learning how to use primary research in my current practice. When I look for evidence to improve my practice, I complete searches on the Internet using keywords. The relevance and believability of data depend on if the research and non-research evidence have the best scientific evidence with experimental evidence from a patient and practitioner. Published articles or studies that are peer-reviewed means it has been reviewed by professionals. The information articles should be current with in-cite notations which made me realize if the information I researched was reliable. I also considered if articles had evidence to determine…

Evidence based practice is so important in the current healthcare world. When evidence based practice is at the center of any organization, there is great improvement in practice and patient outcome. “Only 55% of the time, patients get the evidence-based practice needed for their plan of treatment (IOM 2001). The institute for healthcare improvement, launched 100,000 Lives Campaign enrolled more than 3,000 hospitals, representing an estimated 75 percent of U.S. hospitals beds, which implemented up to six evidence-based and life-saving interventions. In eighteen months, the campaign prevented an estimated 122,300 deaths through the implementation of these six evidence-based practices across the country.” (Liang, 2007). This is a clear example…

In healthcare there are knowledge and practice deficits, due to the inability of mankind to retain all the ever-changing care information for every given scenario in patient care. Therefore, one must be able to search for the evidence-based practices for a given patient’s ailment. Clinical inquiry occurs from this knowledge deficit, and from this inquiry, one can develop clinical questions to guide in the search for the most recent, evidence-based practice recommendations. This process is done first by obtaining a knowledge base of a particular clinical situation, which is found by asking background questions. Thus far we have learned a great deal about the development and implementation of the evidence based practice (EBP) guidelines, now the next important step would be how to effectively apply the EBP to clinical practice. According to Field and Lohr (1990), "Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances." (p. 38). What I liked most about this statement and would like to place emphasis on is “assist…patient decisions about appropriate health care for clinical circumstances” (p.38).
