Numerous studies have been conducted on the beta-blocker use in patients who have had acute coronary syndrome or events. The goal for those studies are to provide evidence to the clinical practice and aim for the best outcomes possible to decrease mortality and increase the patients’ quality of life.

The Iowa Model guides the problem identifications by identifying the initial triggers. The initial triggers can be problem focused or knowledge focused. The problem focused triggers are primarily based on quantitative data collection from risk management, process improvement, internal or external benchmarking, financial, or identification of clinical problems. The knowledge focused triggers are based on qualitative data such as new research or literature, practice standards and guidelines, philosophies of care, and inquiries from intuitional standards committee. The initial triggers are then assessed based on significance to the institutional priority. Once the topic is identified, a team of many disciplines assess and gather relevant research information and data, and then apply to determine the appropriateness to the clinical practice based on suffient evidence. The changes are then piloted in practice areas with the goal of desired outcome based on collected baseline data, and develop evidence based practice guidelines. Reassessment of those outcomes and modification of the guidelines provide future guidance until the most appropriate change is adopted in practice (Polit & Beck, …show more content…
(2001), a level VII qualitative research study indicated that despite the evidence and reputable published guidelines, the beta-blocker use post-acute coronary syndrome various greatly, and are underused. The research study examined the factors that influence the success of improvement efforts to increase beta blocker use after acute coronary syndrome. This question yet again is significant to advanced practice nurses to be able to recognize those factors that can improve the beta blocker use under appropriate
