Ipsid Elementary School Case Study

A longer school day has been a topic of discussion for a long time now. In the case of the Ipsid Elementary School district, the curriculum coordinator suggests that the district lengthen the school day by forty minutes. After an in-depth presentation of research supporting the relationship between the longer school day and student achievement, the superintendent agreed with lengthening the day and proposed the change for the new school year. Implementation of the extension to the school day can be approached several ways. One way would be to extend the length of the academic classes. The idea behind this would give the teachers additional time to use project based learning activities or increase the implementation of collaborative lessons. Another option would be to use the additional time to schedule activities, clubs, and tutorial help. I would choose the latter …show more content…
Everett, 2016 states “the real question is what the extra hour is used for. If it’s for homework, say, or subjects pupils wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to study, that may work” (para. 9). I believe that academic achievement is correlated to well crafted, student engaging lessons. Time in, does not equal student achievement. There needs to be time for students to process the information and practice what they learn. In addition, the student must be challenged to think and apply what they are learning. Using effective best teaching strategies are essential to academic achievement. Strategies such as problem based learning, use of technology, visuals in instruction and differentiation of instruction are important factors on student achievement. The differentiation of instruction model is important because in this model the instruction is planned to an individual strengths and weakness. The objective of the lesson is the same, however that way to achieve the goal changes to fit the needs of the individual
