Author of research paper Karen walker Rough draft Did you know that year round schools have a 2% dropout rate nearly three percent lower than schools without the year round program. More schools should make the change to the year round program and join the 3081 schools and 46 states currently employing the year round program. Opponents of the year round school argue that student need a long summer break to catch up on lost sleep, and lose stress. By employing the year round school program schools will provide students with short breaks spread out throughout the year decreasing student teacher burnout, eliminate the summer learning slide further reducing time spent reviewing, and increase the amount of new material learned which in turn increases test scores as well as enrichment and therefore, US schools should rely on the year round program to further boost the education of Americas schoolers.

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round

During the summer break, students will usually forget a little of what they have learned over their school time. The 15 day break will allow the students to remember more and keep their regular schedule. Also, these 15 days can allow the students to get any late work complete or prepare for something in school coming in the next couple of days. Students going to school could enjoy it more, due to the shorter school period instead of going for the continuous 180 days of school. If students can remember more and enjoy school more, then the students should be able to become more educated.…

It would be almost impossible to hire a teen for one month out of the summer because most businesses search for long-term employees. Also, parents that rely on that working teenager may struggle to get by if their child attends a year-round school. These are just some of the possible outcomes if schools choose to switch to a year-round agenda. This is unacceptable. Allan G. Osborne Jr., a retired principal of the Snug Harbor Community School in Quincy, Massachusetts, expresses that evidence for year-round schools that show improvement are sparse and many educators are reluctant to experiment with year-round school schedules (Osborne Jr. 28).…

Many have argued if Florida schools should switch to year-round school. Florida should not switch to year-round school because it will make attending after school activities difficult and would make it harder, on parents who have to work over the time that their children are off from school. Changing to year-round school would make everything harder so Florida should stick with traditional and not switch to year-round. First of all, after school activities including sports, music and many more are a great way for students in the community to stay active and involved.…

Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…
