Students Need Year-Round School

Great Essays
Summer… a word that brings a smile to every child’s face. It is time for certain school districts to think about changing the traditional school year and having a year-round school calendar. Three hundred years ago, schools were created with the thought that students needed to have the summer off with the busy farming season. The United States is no longer an agricultural society and needs to rethink the school year. The students today are competing with other countries and the children are not doing as well academically. Having year-round school can lessen this gap. All the public schools in the United States need year-round schooling because students have less of a summer slide, shorter breaks, and it helps later on in the work force.

Teachers understand that families like to vacation and give their child camp experiences. Hartley says, “we may have to be flexible if our students are in school in late June and there is a fabulous camp experience, we may have to excuse a few days.” Teachers understand and will let students skip days. Similarly, students also get the chance to take a break from school and relax. Pearson writes, “Frequent breaks might be a great option for students and teachers to re-energize and recharge.” When students come back from break, they should have renewed energy to focus on continuing to learn the curriculum. Students need breaks every couple of weeks to refresh their mind and year-round school gives them this opportunity. In the article, “Year-Round School Advantages and Disadvantages” Amy Pearson, a licensed elementary teacher from kindergarten to sixth grade writes, “Both teachers and students might feel less burnout when they get more extended time off throughout the year.” Students get many breaks that helps them get their focus back on school that helps them learn better. In summary, year-round schooling provides many breaks that help the students come back ready to learn and teachers are flexible with vacation

In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

Year-Round Education Although some people are opposed to year round education because it interferes with their lifestyles, The United States should adopt a system of year round education, because children forget what they have learned the previous year and therefore fall behind in school. History Year Round school is an opportunity to keep kids in school anywhere from six to nine weeks in a row and then are broken up by two to four week vacations. This is called a track. Originally educators thought that this would keep the children in a continual state of learning, and allow them a little break to rejuvenate. The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

With year-round school, it makes this dream possible. There is a debate on whether students should attend school year-round or stick to going to school with a long 2-3 month vacation in between school years. School boards should make the switch to year-round because year-round schooling can help with improving test scores, fixing the problem of overcrowded classrooms, and helping students stay engaged at school. “Many people believe that summers are valuable times for students to grow and learn outside of the classroom environment,” (O’Sullivan 410). However, a way to fix this would be to have the schools include these in their program. Offer the parents a type of summer camp run by year-round schools that runs during the months that your student is out of school in the summer, that way they can still be involved in the summer camps and also get to meet some new people.…

Year round schooling is another way to have kids get more education. First of all, some people find kids to learn more things outside and on vacation from the outside world than in school. This proves that year round school is a type of education that helps students learn better and faster because kids learn lots of things outside of school according to studies and year round school adds even more breaks giving kids even more time to learn things outside of school. There are other things that proove year round schooling is helpful to students on the education side such as “tests show about 2.6 months of learning is lost during the summer, and year-round schooling is a simple solution, according to an article on National Association for Year-round Education’s website. This explains how there is a big benefit in education from year round school because of how kids don’t lose what they learned during very long breaks and instead become better educated and get better grades.…

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

No one wants to give up their summer break for anything, especially school. Children enjoy their summer, it is the time they can do whatever with no interruption, like run outside all day, swim, or hang out with friends. Many teenagers have summer responsibilities, bailing hay, for example, is an all-day activity and is easier to start in the morning so it is not too hot and teenagers cannot bail hay for their parents or some old man who needs help if they have to be at school. With no teenagers making hay, for old men who need help, who is going to do it? Summer is also a time for families to visit other family members out of state or go on family vacations together, they cannot go on vacation with school taking up that time.…
