Thesis: Year round school is damaging to students and traditions.

Most people take a strong liking to traditional schools for the fact that they are permitted to have a summer break without wearing the students out. The facts tell us that it’s hurting us more than helping us. Breaking tradition of summer break with year round school can cause students to get bored with work and stressed. In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

With more and more people switching to year round schools, more and more families are struggling to keep summer vacations and traditions alive. At the beginning of summer many families are getting ready for vacations, camping, and more, but if there is year round schools, then they will have to put off family traditions and vacations they have been doing for years or have been looking forward to for a while, so they have to get rid of all that just for year round schooling, which just started. Also, what if the parents already paid for that trip? That wouldn't be fair for them to pay good money on a trip that the whole family wanted to go on, just for year round school. Now if they want to go on a trip it has to be planned around the school's…

The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

So many different issues went through my mind, but only one stood out above all the rest as one that needs to be discussed more than it already is: education. Education is the system that teaches the people of tomorrow and therefore should not have problems surrounding it. One of the questions that surrounds education is long students should be in school. This issue of a year round school is the topic I have chosen and through some research already I can tell that this will help with future schools in deciding whether to have this school or not.…

School has traditionally always had summer vacation, it has had summer vacation since the late 1800s, thought to be for agrarian reason has now been debunked for years, and yet nothing has changed. Not only has the agrarian excuse been debunked, but it proves how outdated the idea of a summer vacation is, and has been a struggling time for struggling families. To help academically and economically the school day should be shortened, but the academic year should be extended to year round schooling to make up for the time that is lost in doing nothing. The real reason why summer vacation exists, although true that in the agrarian calendar there would be a time for work in the summer, most of it was during spring.…

The traditional school year has been in practice for decades and in this time, has shown that it is greatly successful. To switch to year-round schooling would overall be incredibly inconvenient for each person involved. The traditional school year should remain in Niagara because in comparison to year-round schooling it is less expensive, more convenient for parents, and offers more opportunities for students. Funding for education is expensive enough as is, and possibly making the school year longer could alter these costs. To fund education all school staff must be paid, which includes teachers, secretaries, and janitors.…

Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…

The school year shouldn’t be change. It should stay the same. If you change it students and other teachers might disagree, because like what I said long summer vacation is a time for students and even for teachers to enjoy the nice, happy feeling of summer. School year shouldn’t be changed as we still need to have 2 weeks of winter break, 1 week of spring and 10-week summer break. It should just stay the same no need to change it.…
