Year Round School
Education is valued highly in today 's society, for the next generation to lead this country they need to know as much as they can. Teaching children the basic mathematics, English, history, and science now starting in kindergarten. With courses, advancing teachers reteach the basics at the beginning of every school year. Imagine all year at school, no three month summer vacation, just all year school. What would that be like, and would children enjoy it? Would the teachers? Teachers will have to make lesson plans, and subjects to study that matches that grade level, and also skip seeing their children for summer too. All year at school means less time out of school and may even boost children to higher grades so they can

No one wants to give up their summer break for anything, especially school. Children enjoy their summer, it is the time they can do whatever with no interruption, like run outside all day, swim, or hang out with friends. Many teenagers have summer responsibilities, bailing hay, for example, is an all-day activity and is easier to start in the morning so it is not too hot and teenagers cannot bail hay for their parents or some old man who needs help if they have to be at school. With no teenagers making hay, for old men who need help, who is going to do it? Summer is also a time for families to visit other family members out of state or go on family vacations together, they cannot go on vacation with school taking up that time. Goff explains that “when you choose an exciting new place as a family, it helps you bond and learn new things about each other that you don 't get to see every day,” …show more content…
Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”

Each year, school districts are faced with a growing population of students. The issue with this is that many districts have a shortage of school facilities, and they are limited to the amount of money they can spend on each of these facilities. To handle this issue, school districts around the world have adopted a year-round school calendar to ensure they are using these existing school facilities to their full ability. Year-round schooling arranges the breaks differently, causing students to be in school all throughout the year, rather than having three months off in the summer. In addition to maximizing the use of the schools, year-round schooling improves student learning and saves money in the long run.…

Year-round school would make the school year longer and the students could be taught more. The teachers will also be in a better mood to teach because the break would've gave them some time away from school. In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

Year-round schedules allow more vacation options and lowers learning loss that occurs during the summer. According to Kimberly Dumucha Kalil, students’ knowledge from the previous year decreases over the summer. This slide can be removed, though, by getting rid of long vacations. “If your child doesn’t have a long break, it helps prevent summer learning loss,” according to Carol Lloyd. With little to do, students will often get bored in the summer, so the shorter, frequent breaks of year-round school are a wiser choice (Kalil).…

One obstacle would be the costs of year-round schools. Since the school, never officially has an off period, maintenance on the school buildings can be difficult. “Many argue that implementing year-round schooling would be too costly, as it would lead to increased spending on teacher and staff salaries…,” (O’Sullivan 411). Schools are already having to limit their spending and cut back on things that they don’t feel is necessary, but with the addition of these schools helping out in the long run on children’s education, then I think it's something that must be done. Another is that cities where tourism is high would not be in favor of this program due to the fact that less people would be vacationing during their peak months.…

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

Little do we know year-round schooling has many more advantages than disadvantages, actually a lot of good things can come out of this. When schools had just begun, summers were necessary because children needed to help their families by working on the farm, and helping around the house.…
