Starting by stating how more than three thousand K-12 schools around the country follow some type of a year-round schooling calendar. The author also states that a key idea to remember is that year-round schooling is not the same as expanded learning time, which means that the school days or school year becomes longer. Rather that many, if not all, year-round schools reorganize the standard one-hundred-and-eighty-day school year schedule so that it works throughout the year in a way students are still able to learn and still have time for themselves. Some advantages within a year-round schooling calendar rid students of possible summer “learning loss”, reducing teacher and student burnout, and being organized to help working parents manage their schedules. Year-round schedules can help to enrich a student’s experiences and opportunities by allowing them to explore multiple courses that they may not have had extended time to delve into. Or to explore in depth brand new topics they had interest in but could not learn more about in their “normal” school schedule. Some disadvantages that come up with the idea of year-round schooling is that there can be added costs to school districts for utilities in buildings, payment for staff and teachers, and lack of materials or space for children’s learning. Year-round schooling can also come to take away from a student’s time to experience and explore anything outside of the classroom, and can come to reduce a teacher’s time to receive professional development hours and
