Social Issues A social issue also called a social problem, social conflict, or social illness refers to an issue that influences and is opposed by a considerable number of individuals within a society. It is often the consequence of factors extending beyond an individual 's social issue is the source of a conflicting opinion on the grounds of what is perceived as a morally just personal life or societal order. Social issues are distinguished from economic issues; however, some issues such as immigration have both social and economic aspects. To be classified as a social issue or a social illness, a topic or issue must both influence the society it is in, and be opposed by a fair amount of individuals. The opposition need not be the majority of the people. Social issues can be local, national or international. The United States is going through quite a bit of upheaval lately when it comes to social change. Americans are always very busy, constantly working, or focusing on entertainment as an escape, so it can be tough to sit down and simply think about the issues that we see on the nightly news. Understanding social issues in America is the first step toward a serious discussion about them. Those serious discussions, among communities and government and even the workplace, can help lead to big changes.
