Adolescence is an important period in our lifetime, it is when we are most vulnerable to influence by others. Social media plays a huge role in how people connect with one another in their daily lives. This is especially true for adolescents who are among the heaviest users of social networking sites. While teens strive to find their own identities, they come across several forms of influence through social media. Some of these effects are caused by cyberbullying, sexting, and a phenomenon known as Facebook Depression. As adolescents grow into adulthood, negative influences through social media can impact them for the rest of their lives.

In Fleur Gabriel’s “Sexting, Selfies and Self-Harm”, social media present new possibilities for expression and sociality, but the effect that social media are having on young people is a subject of considerable academic and public concern. Social media has given a new view on “growing up. since teens have more access to inappropriate content on the internet. These adolescents have access to a plethora of information on the internet and are able to learn new things every single day. Most of the time young girls feel sexualized while looking a pictures of beautiful, “perfect people.” This causes the teens to become more sexually aware and give in to the peer pressure of sending nude photos. When sending these photos they hope to get a positive response from the party/parties receiving the photo. Most adolescents who participate in sexting do not realize that they can not control where the photo goes
