Do you want six sigma or quality?
The author discusses the difference between six sigma and quality with articulation of their dependence on each other. According to the article, quality and six sigma are time and again measured as links in a chain. The argument is based on understanding if six sigma helps in improving quality or it is just an indicator to tell us where we are, what are we doing, and where we are heading. Which approach can help in improving quality is to be determined, and could it be approaches like six sigma, TQM, TPM or it could be a bottom up approach like quality circles, motivating workers, at the grass roots level? If a patient goes to a hospital where which is popular, posh with all the modern amenities, and does have all the proper credentials with accreditations. A person is admitted for an eye surgery and after surgery the person gets to know that the wrong eye has been operated. Will the person be consoled by this argument that the hospital is six sigma certified and the number of mistakes that happens are too less to be quantified? Also, to add if the hospital says that they are tracking all medical errors and initiating corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). The person will lose faith in the facility and the measures taken won’t even effect the quality.
