Servant Leadership
Northhouse wrote Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. My favorite is a statement from Peter Drucker, “the only definition of a leader is someone who has followers.” That is a simple statement, and that puts it in a simple form. Leadership is not a simple form, and Warren Bennis and I agree that Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having vision that is well communicated, building among colleagues and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. Staff has lost their unity, small power struggles have been going on with deviations of the job. Other jobs are not getting done they are being left for other members to pick up the slack. This is creating concern and issues to the interest of the long term staff members and there needs to be clarity.
In reviewing the two issues there is also an underlining issue that needs to be addressed as well. The team has lost its unity and more than ever everyone is going in different directions. Early on this year in March we lost David, our supervisor. David was well liked, focused, smart; he interjected huge doses of enthusiasm in his team. Once David was gone then the role of supervisor just floated and no one really took to it. The person that was next in line did not choose to step up; he had a Laissez-Faire leadership style. The style this leader used was one with very little guidance; he left everyone to get on with their work. The times when jobs came up he would just say who wants it, without assigning it to the correct person. The problem with this style is that a manage can become to detached from work and the organization, this can cause situations where the manager is not exerting sufficient control. The Computer Techs Level One started calling himself an “Engineers” not attending to his work.
