School leaders must be willing to listen first. If schools push their message without first engaging the community in the creation of a true partnership many may be turned off by an apparent lack of two-way communication. In a recent presentation by The Gear Up initiative that works with my district and the local High School district in an effort to “gear students up” for college, cautions organizations that evaluation can “open up a can of worms”. They suggest that any organization keeps asking questions to further refine what they want to evaluate and what data they can collect to help answer those questions. Data entry is the key to an effective evaluation. Community surveys both at the onset and throughout the duration of the outreach can be used to gauge the success of these programs. Schools should be able to choose themselves, however, which of the six types of involvement to pursue, depending on their own situation and resources. Some districts gather results throughout the year at the schools and create a model of best practices for other schools to replicate, even organizing workshops to help. The idea is to provide support and encouragement for local ideas to flourish-while also being clear that community involvement is a non-negotiable goal (Vogel 2006).

Currently the District I work for has not prioritized the important role that community partnerships can play. This course has illustrated the important role that the human resources department can play in capitalizing on the current employees families and community members.
