Personal Narrative: A Career As A School Counselor

Improved Essays
Throughout my seven years as a School Counselor in the district I have developed several programs and maintained others. One program that I have taken on more of a leadership role in is the SRBI / PBIS team at Westside Middle School Academy. The SRBI / PBIS team and I meet weekly to discuss where we are and where we need to be. We utilize data to keep us informed of our current practices and reflect on what needs to be changed. We are constantly coming up with different ways to educate teachers in the process and the interventions. Leading this group has actually shaped the way I advocate for my students as a counselor. It has helped me shift my role in team meetings and parent / teacher conferences. I have found that I am better equipped …show more content…
I have seen how a school counselor can provide a student with an opportunity to grow into a successful adult that is prepared to meet life’s challenges. My short-term goal is to become a Department head of the School Counseling department. I see the need of the School Counseling department to change in Danbury to align with the district's need. I believe that the role of a School Counselor in Danbury has evolved over the years in order to meet the needs of the population and I would like to be part of that continuous change. I have had the opportunity to write curriculum for the advisory program at the middle school level and it has truly given me an appreciation for how we can do so much more. I would like to have the opportunity to extend the knowledge I have gained and share it with other School Counselors in the …show more content…
My goal is to provide all learners the support they need to access the curriculum. I truly believe that we have some phenomenal teachers in our district that can mentor others. I think we need to capitalize on the skills in our district. I think that it would engage other teachers to learn from their peers and possibly open the door for them to try something new that they normally wouldn’t. In addition to providing teachers with meaningful professional development to improve their teaching practices, I would like to push the schools in our district to engage more with the community. In order to effectively prepare our students to gain the skills, they need to be successful in today's ever-changing society with the need to collaboratively work with the community as a

I was successful in doing this because all of these strategies have the incorporation of learning communities, reinforcing the student’s efforts, and learner-centered strategies. This professional development was based on the needs of our staff and students. These goals are a direct correlation of the survey results and the schools SIP. These strategies I needed to incorporate were natural because the fit into the needs of our staff and helped in the collaboration of the new and veteran teachers. These strategies also help align with the needs of motivating our students and getting our parents involved in our educational process.…

As a teacher it is important to get to know your students in order to help them to reach their full potential. The program has given me the tools and advice to become a successful teacher, now it 's my turn to use them in the classroom. I could go into student teaching today knowing that I am able to write and instruct multi-disciplinary lessons, create curriculum maps and unit studies, implement the Common Core Standards, and use assessment and differentiation…

Teachers must receive initial and ongoing professional development on the new curriculum and instructional strategies for effective teaching, so they are comfortable and confident with the delivery and implementation. Another technique to support change and implementation is to have model classrooms, or a “go to list of teachers based on strengths” as Principal Deirdre Keyes from Joseph F. Lamb stated in the module 6 video “Improving Instruction.” This type of instructional support not only improves teacher instruction but also builds teacher leaders. Like Ornstein and Hunkins stated, “The key to getting teachers committed to an innovation is involvement” (2015, pg. 233). By allowing teachers to visit other classrooms and see various aspects of a lesson being delivered, we are encouraging growth and creating a productive culture of learning for everyone, teachers and students.…

As a teacher leader, I would add teacher collaboration as another goal for my future growth. Facilitating or attending professional developments is education and training that strengthens and improves educators as professionals. Whether additional education focuses on subject matter, teaching skills or any other area that increases a teacher’s effectiveness; it’s all beneficial to an educator. Throughout the teacher leadership program I have been taught that teachers must stay up to date in their preparation to acquire new classroom skills. By collaborating with other educators, I strengthen my teaching skills.…

Mobilizing people require teachers to be active communicators and not be afraid of engaging others to complete a task. In today’s schools, the ones that are successful rely on teamwork from faculty and staff. My LOL team is a way I can improve on this skill. For example, my LOL team is responsible for many of the activities that we do at our professional development days. Mobilizing people to make sure we have a fruitful and active learning day takes input from everyone, so you have to be able to know how to engage members of the…

In truth, when teachers are placed in an environment with a more knowledgeable colleague who shares their knowledge, then it will create opportunities for them to model and practice the information and knowledge obtained in their own classrooms (Chen, Lin, & Wu, 2015; Mizell, 2010). According to several researchers (Borko & Putnam, 2000; Cherkowski & Kelly, 2015; Mizell, 2010), professional development increases and strengthens the impact individual teachers or school leaders have on the educational practices perform within their schools. Furthermore, continuous professional development is also essential as it helps teachers to find effective ways to help students become active and critical thinkers (Berry et al., 2009). Research by Mizell (2010) also indicated that during professional development, teachers are engaged in the process of finding improved and suitable ways to positively change the methodologies used to educate…

I especially want to remember the acronym START. From what I saw in my observations, these characteristics are an effective way to teach students because they allow students to learn in different ways but still obtain the same knowledge. I watched many teachers use a rigorous curriculum and student-centered classroom. However, I want to successfully incorporate all of the characteristics in my future classroom. I want my students to have some control over how they learn by being actively involved in my classroom.…

As a mentor, this is important to me because I know with the more experience a teacher has, the more knowledge they gain. My colleague’s response told me she is progressing as an educator because of the changes she has made from experience. Another assumption from Knowles is the readiness of adults to learn as they mature (Smith, 2010). As educators, we need to improve our skills, and we do that by attending workshops our district offers. Furthermore, our readiness to learn is seen by the different learning communities we join.…

I have been taught that relationships with students and parents can really help children succeed in the classroom. My goal as a teacher is to be able to find a way to relate to every student that I have. This can only help the students and myself overall. The author’s purpose of this material was to show a meaningful role doing what he could to help protect and encourage his students.…
