Reimbursement of services provided by hospitals is becoming increasingly dependent on patient satisfaction scores. Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Care Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys are used to determine patient satisfaction. Most of the questions in this survey are directly related to patient care. Patient satisfaction scores can affect a hospital’s ability to attract patients positively or negatively and increase reimbursements to their facility.
During my clinical rotation at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Patterson, I had the opportunity to be with the patient at the time of physician’s rounds. The physician questioned the patient and me to know whether either of us had any concerns about the medical care being given. I was able to advocate for the patient and bring up some of the patient’s concerns. I was also able to reinforce the instructions given by the physician to the patient after the visit was completed. The patient seemed really happy and satisfied about the care he had received. I was also feeling satisfied with my job after the direct communication with the physician during the patient round. The mission statement focuses on giving exceptional care to improve the health of the individual and the community. One of the visions of the hospital is to provide transformational heeling presence. The philosophy of the hospital also values excellence and the highest possible standards of clinical and service quality. My change proposal on nurse-physician collaborative care focuses on patient satisfaction and patient safety, which can accomplish exceptional quality care, generate transformational healing presence and provide the highest possible standards of care.
