The ever increasing diversity of the nation’s workplaces has certainly resulted in increased productivity and inclusion. Economist have linked corporate diversity with productivity in several studies (Liberman, 2002). Yet, in the face of this stands startling statistics like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) finding that religious discrimination charges have increased 100% since 1997 (Burton et al, 2014). Understanding the potential implications of this divergent findings, and seeing the increasing religious diversity of the department, the Fire Chief developed this committee to research the issue. This report contains the findings of the committee and recommended course of action. These findings include the EEOC definition of religious discrimination, the identification of legal requirements, an outlined policy with implementation steps and several contingency plans that support to proposed policy change.
Religious Accommodations Simply stated, the EEOC defines religious discrimination as the unfavorable treatment of an employee or applicant because of his or her religious beliefs (EEOC, n.d.). The provisions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act further define religion by stating that the concept is not limit to the belief in a traditional religion, organized religions, but that it also extends to other religions that are unpopular or strange (EEOC, n.d.). Therefore, employers are compelled to provide reasonable accommodations for religious purposes.…
