Dr. Freeborough,

With every passing week, I am gaining a clearer understanding of the principles of servant leadership and how these principles can be applied within my current role in my organization as well as how they can be applied in other settings. Using the Servant Leadership Theory does have its downsides, unfortunately. One issue is that other leaders utilizing other leadership techniques could see the Servant Leadership methods as weak. One of the biggest issues with Servant Leadership Theory is that the leader is constantly sharing things as opposed to keeping thigs like information and power to themselves (Daft, 2014). This leadership style could make other leaders underestimate the power that a leader using the Servant Leadership Theory maintains. I know particularly in the Office of the District Attorney where I currently work, other departments are predominantly male-run, by men who have no qualms giving orders.…

Rachael, You are correct when you stated in your second paragraph that the best practices for servant leadership should build up employees, growing them in their strengths and abilities while creating an environment that encourages great customer service. In addition to the “best practices” that constitutes a secure employee environment, the focus of servant leader managers in organizations needs to shift from processes and outcomes to people and the future, which presents a threefold challenge for the organization. These challenges include (1) how to develop workers and unleash their creative potential, (2) how to create a positive workplace that will attract and retain talented workers, and (3) how to reinforce innovations and risk-taking…

These principles include listening, empathy, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, and commitment to the growth of people (Northouse, 2016). Let me provide further details on two of the principles that I am able to utilize. I have identified three strengths related to servant leadership theory. The first strength is selflessness. It relates to the servant leadership theory because a selfless leader takes care of those they are leading before themselves (Daft, 2014). For example, I have always made sure that others were taken care of before myself with lunch breaks and scheduling of time off and vacations. My staff, my patients and doctors have always come before myself.…

Servant leadership influenced some of the decisions I have made in the past. For example, for the morale issue that the UCCC had in the clinic, I tried to resolve this by encouraging my employees to “take leadership responsibilities, to understand that everyone is responsible for the success of the team” (Hunter, 2004). My goal in this situation was to ensure that each employee is happy and contented with their work environment, because happy employees mean a more comfortable environment for both our employees and our…

I also feel you made an excellent point about how servant leaders empower their subordinates by making their comments and concerns a priority. According to Muthia and Krishnan (2015), “servant leaders develop followers, who in turn act as moral agents continuing to develop others into servant leaders; servant leaders are instrumental in grooming their followers to become wiser, healthier, and more autonomous, and thus become servant leaders themselves” (p. 10). In other words, servant leadership creates a long-lasting environment of servant leaders through…

Before I began this journey of going back to school to get my degree I did not know if I could do what was needed to finish. However, as I have gotten into my coursework and started to learn what it is to be a leader, there have been concepts and terms that I have clung on to. For instance, cultural diversity, conflict resolution, decision making, problems solving, quality, and now servant-leadership. Then moving into a management role, providing direction to my team to continue to give customers excellent support, guidance, and knowledge to the rest of campus.…
