Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).
Athletes are very highly paid due to the fact that there is a large demand of viewers that like to follow their sport. Why should athletes be paid more than important social figures such as the president for just playing a game? The average salary for players in the NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL are as follows in order; $5.15million, $3.31mllion, $1.9million and $2.4million (Dorish). The lowest of these salaries is still more than 3 times that of the president of the United States of America who makes $400,000 a year (Longley). The biggest argument for athletes to make more money than the president is that most athletes’ work based on moneymaking incentives. The president of the United States of America works for the people to make the country better for everyone and shouldn’t have to worry about how much money he makes. Also, athletes make a lot of their money off of sponsorships and commercials, something that the president is not allowed to do. The fact of the matter is that although the president might have a greater role in shaping the way we all live our lives the economics of it all shows that the popularity produced by athletes has a greater pay-off.
Sports have been around for thousands of years and athletes have been looked upon as heroes for as long as sports have been around due to the fact that they do one thing that humans always love and that is entertain.
