Personal Narrative: My Passion For Speech Pathology

As I walked through the doors of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, at the age of ten, little did I know a passion would develop. After being invited to join my cousin’s speech therapy session, my passion for speech pathology began. Since that day, my passion for this profession has increased as I have researched and observed in various clinical settings.
In May of 2015, I completed my degree in elementary education. I student taught in a kindergarten classroom during my last year as an undergraduate. During that year, I developed and improved many skills and abilities that will help me succeed throughout my life. I developed the skills of time management, planning, and organization. These three skills were essential when working with kindergarteners. I had to use time management in planning preparations and lesson plan writing. As a result of these observation experiences, my love for the profession has increased. Throughout my observation experiences, the impact a speech-language pathologist can have on their patients was very eye opening. Given I have had the opportunity to work with school age children, I have seen the impact speech and language disorders have on their development, academics, and social interactions. I have had the opportunity to observe and interact with a variety of children who have articulation and phonological disorders, expressive and receptive language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and Down syndrome. Each child had a unique combination of needs and abilities.
