My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

These objectives would be devised and instructed within the therapy setting at the clinic, but for some children the aims…

Over the course of nine sessions at the clinic, Dean worked on consonant sequences in /st/, /sl/, /fl/, and /bl/ and velars (/k/ and /g/). The session objectives were adjusted as Dean showed competence in producing target sounds, but lack of carryover into conversation. Dean recently used a self-monitoring chart to increase his awareness of accurate speech sounds and to slow his rate of speaking. He marked the chart each time he said the following target sounds correctly: /k/, /sl/, /bl/ and /fl/. Many children and adults at some point in their life require therapy from a speech language pathologist (SLP). Debra Edgar states that the 24th Annual Report to Congress on the Implementation of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act implies that “speech or language impairment was the most prevalent disability category” (par. 3). Speech or language impairment is becoming more frequent and the need for speech-language pathologists is growing. There are many concerns about the lack of speech-language pathologist and this all revolves around what people know about this type of therapy. I was most impressed with the panelist Lois Nelson. As I listened to her speech, my fingers typing on my keyboard were not able to keep up with the wealth of information she had on clinical ideas to use with PWS. Each of her ideas was concrete, clear, and educational. I laughed, in agreement, as she explained it was odd that Speech-Language Pathologist’s keep the knowledge behind stuttering to themselves not sharing with the…
