During the Winter 2016 semester, I was able to complete an externship at New York Neurogenic, Aspire P.C. Throughout my time at New York Neurogenic, I was able to work with children to adults, ranging from the ages of 3 to 87. Similarly, I had gained experience with various disorders in this setting, which included: dysphagia, expressive/ receptive language, articulation/ phonology, voice, cognitive disorders, cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), aphasia, demyelinating diseases, Autism spectrum disorder, and AAC. The externship began with a crossover week in which I observed my supervisor and former graduate interns working with all the patients. I gradually took over lesson planning and therapy sessions of my patients with the help of the student interns.
Analysis:
1) Organizational Skills & Professionalism
There was a lot to learn from New York Neurogenic. While interning, it was the first time that I was exposed to billing and Webpt, an electronic medical record system. There were specific guidelines for completing SOAP notes and evaluations, however, the most important aspect was being organized. Marissa Barrera provided all the graduate interns with the workshop on Neuromuscular Electro-Stimulation (NMES). Although it was a workshop required for the externship, it provided me with real-life experience of all the continuing education courses that I will have to complete in the future. The workshop on NMES was informative and useful, particularly since the majority of patients I treated had dysphagia and work currently using neuromuscular electro stimulation to the submantle region. The workshop provided hands-on experience, as well as the science in justification behind using neuromuscular stimulation.
