Background of the Experience:
During the Winter 2016 semester, I was able to complete an externship at New York Neurogenic, Aspire P.C. Throughout my time at New York Neurogenic, I was able to work with children to adults, ranging from the ages of 3 to 87. Similarly, I had gained experience with various disorders in this setting, which included: dysphagia, expressive/ receptive language, articulation/ phonology, voice, cognitive disorders, cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), aphasia, demyelinating diseases, Autism spectrum disorder, and AAC. The externship began with a crossover week in which I observed my supervisor and former graduate interns working with all the patients. I gradually took over lesson planning and therapy sessions of my patients with the help of the student interns.
Analysis:

There was a lot to learn from New York Neurogenic. While interning, it was the first time that I was exposed to billing and Webpt, an electronic medical record system. There were specific guidelines for completing SOAP notes and evaluations, however, the most important aspect was being organized. Marissa Barrera provided all the graduate interns with the workshop on Neuromuscular Electro-Stimulation (NMES). Although it was a workshop required for the externship, it provided me with real-life experience of all the continuing education courses that I will have to complete in the future. The workshop on NMES was informative and useful, particularly since the majority of patients I treated had dysphagia and work currently using neuromuscular electro stimulation to the submantle region. The workshop provided hands-on experience, as well as the science in justification behind using neuromuscular stimulation. In addition, the workshop was an example of all the possible changes in the field of speech-language

During my internship at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center (STC), I gained more confidence in my decision in eventually pursuing a career in health care, either through being a researcher or a physician. I first started my internship at the University of Maryland STC in my senior year of high school as a requirement for my magnet program. The internship was a volunteer position but we performed basic tasks such as stocking each bay with supplies and saline solution, retrieving blood from the blood bank when needed, and providing blankets and socks for incoming patients. I never paid attention to the importance of these tasks until one specific incident.…

This project involved working with a client with acquired aphasia in writing a book about a topic of their choosing. The goal of this program was not only to increase physical communication abilities, but also to increase positive attitudes about rehabilitation. The SLPs who directed this program taught me how this profession is about the whole person. It is about giving individuals with communication disorders the ability to communicate and the confidence in doing so. These two inseparable aspects of therapy reinforced what I already knew to be my intrinsic reasons for wanting to be an…

After talking to current clinicians and professors, I expected clinic to be difficult, and I expected to be overwhelmed especially at the beginning of the semester. Additionally, I expected clinic to be even more difficult when combined with difficult classes and applying to graduate school. However, clinic was different than my expectations. To explain, my first clinical practicum was the least stressful aspect of my semester.…

Counseling in the field of speech-language pathology is essential when dealing with individuals with communication disorders. Counseling is one of the domains of service delivery described in the ASHA Scope of Practice for Speech-Language Pathology (ASHA, 2007). The role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) in the counseling process involves supporting those living with communication disorders by helping them navigate their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and emotional responses associated with the diseases, providing information and guidance to patients and family members and developing coping strategies to productively live with the disorder, reducing barriers to progress in treatment, and increasing therapy outcomes and prognosis. Martin utilized a wide array of strategies to cope with the losses he experienced. One of his key strategies was appraisal-focused (Drench, et al., p. 178). He describes finding comfort in talking to God because God didn’t need proof of Martin’s existence (Pistorius, p. 174). For Martin this was an adaptive strategy. To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…

My previous work experience has exposed me to a variety of team dynamics and I would describe my exposure as very positive. My love for connecting with people has been a major factor in my overall employment success, such as, two management roles before reaching my twenty’s and also a fulfilling career in the financial industry for nine years. Working in a customer service role for the last 14 years I have faced struggles with communication, as well as developed positive skills to work effectively with others. One of the most essential elements I have learned from working as a Financial Advisor is how to build trust with people. I firmly believe this is key to any successful relationship, rather an employment relationship or otherwise.…
