Iclesias Phanord Breaking the Norm I’m surrounded by bouncing basketball and expectations. I had not yet found my vocation. However, many people around me had; whether it was basketball, cheerleading, or track - they had found a purpose that drove them. I did not have anything that I was truly passionate about but when I began playing volleyball, I discovered it and I fell in love with the intensity that came when I touched a volleyball. The first year of volleyball was rough, I enjoyed the adrenaline that flooded my body when the seconds turned into minutes which slowly turned into …show more content…
The second year of high school is when the difficult days paid off. I did become better but... still not good enough. Consequently, I continued to practice whenever I could find the time. Eventually I made the decision to attend a camp to hone my skills and educate myself about the sport that I loved so much. Training with professionals and more experienced players helped me tremendously. During those weeks, I worked harder than I ever had on a hobby before and I enjoyed every second of it, Eventually some of the movements became cemented like muscle memory. The skills that I acquired from camp like the ability to find weaknesses and exploit them in intense athletic situations and the ability to think quickly in distress. These things were not easy to develop and I’m far from perfecting them, but thanks to the camp, I’m prepared to build off the template. There were many amazing people that I had the pleasure of being surrounded by, from national players to college professionals and coaches that have had experience in volleyball for years. Watching them play was extraordinary. The pressure that they gave during a game was incredibly intimidating. Once they were like me - someone who was a novice who was

I stopped playing basketball after I tore my ACL at the beginning of my season in 8th grade, and I just never seemed to pick up where I left off. I made the freshman volleyball last year and had an amazing season. However, tryouts were tough and cuts were harsh this year. A couple of my friends and I were unfortunately cut from the JV team. Although, I plan to come back next year better than…

In addition, I learned how much better I must perform to be able to lead my team to victory. To be successful against teams as skilled as we played in Nationals, my team and I must stay focused, confident and relaxed. Something else I have taken a grasp of is that I have made it to a considerably high level of competition, so that if I push myself to the limit, I can become a highly skilled player as demonstrated at the…

In high school, it can seem like the most important thing in life. I, fortunately, was involved in many other activities to fill up my time. I could not play volleyball my sophomore or junior year. This really upset me because I love the sport. While sitting on the side lines, I had a decision to make: sit here bitterly and wish I could be playing, feeling sorry for myself, or cheer my team on and try to be a positive impact on them.…

Because we lost our game the previous night, we all knew what kind of practice we were in for, and it was not a fun one. First, we had to do a drill that involved each of us individually bumping the volleyball in the air and bumping it again so we were passing to ourselves for one minute. While this seemed like an easy drill, it was not so easy for all nine players on the sophomore team. Also, every time a ball hit the ground we had to do six sprints the width of the volleyball court. We ended up doing this all practice until, in the last five minutes, we successfully completed the drill.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

My love for the sport of volleyball started in the summer going into 8th grade when my life took a turn for the worse . Instead of dealing with my problems I decided that avoiding it would be my best option. I found myself throwing all my time into my new sport. My mentality at the time was if I stay longer at this practice, or went to this clinic, I wouldn’t have to face the constant fighting and hostility that waited for me at home. Before I knew it volleyball became my safe haven, teammates became my new family that I yearned for, and needless to say volleyball became my life.…

At 12 years old I didn't know that volleyball was like science and if you didn't do things a certain way it was almost impossible that it would work out for you. I had been doing everything wrong and was shown multiple times how to do things. I was extremely embarrassed because everyone else was getting the hang of things and I just was not. The 2nd day was much better and I was starting to understand more and get the hang of things, by the 3rd day I was so confident in myself and the coaches were complimenting me saying that I was doing very well.…
