One of the goals in nursing is to promote quality health care by using patient centered care methods. First, I will explain what is meant by the term patient centered care. I will also discuss how effective communication can be used in patient centered care.
Patient centered care is a fundamental concept that has been widely used by all healthcare providers. However, there has been a lot of misconceptions regarding the meaning of patient centered care. Many assumed that because providing care essentially goes hand in hand with patient, everything they do is naturally patient-centered. Boykins (2014) describes communication with the patient as, “effective, appropriate and therapeutic” (p.40). I believe that communication is an important aspect in delivering quality health care and many healthcare providers overlook how effective communication can improve the quality of healthcare that they can provide. Patient centered care is based on cooperation between the nurse and the patient and this relationship can only be achieved by having good communication. A nurse cannot provide a patient centered care without a successful communication with the patient. One of the responsibilities a nurse has to do is to educate his/her patient. For example, if one of the patient smoke cigarettes, the nurse has to educate him/her about the consequences of smoking and try to persuade the patient to stop. The nurse have to properly inform the patient in order to prevent further damage to his/her health. Even though the patient may not agree, it is the nurse’s job to properly convey information and to make sure that the patient understand the information that was
