There will always be barriers that separate healthcare professionals from their patients; having the knowledge and skills to address such barriers while maintaining professionalism and the patient’s best interest in mind is critical in patient centered care. As a colorful nation comprised of people that come from diverse backgrounds with different cultures, beliefs and traditions, learning the skills necessary to become effective communicators is of essence. An effective communicator has the ability to shift their way of explaining and communicating depending on their audience. Becoming a good communicator requires an extensive skill set. Hilt used what is known as the LEARN model, which was discussed earlier this semester in an article by Huber (2009). The LEARN model is a tool to overcome cultural dissonance; Hilt used the L by listening to the needs of the Lees through a non-judgmental lens, she used the E when explaining the need to follow doctors orders for the well being of Lia, the A when acknowledging their cultural beliefs, the R when making recommendations and making an effort to make them understand (through making a conscious effort using lists, and translations) and finally, the N when negotiating and finally convincing them to give Lia the medications that she needed despite their opposing …show more content…
Eradicating or diminishing thoughts of superiority because of the cultural and educational gaps between healthcare providers their patient’s is necessary when aiming for patient centered care. Approaching patients with opposing cultural views with an open mind and a sense of equality rather than that of superiority can make patients feel more welcome and willing to accept recommendations even when such recommendations go against their beliefs. In addition, building the skills necessary to have the ability to explain and communicate differently in a way that is easy to comprehend depending on the audience (i.e., a child or someone who does not speak the language) is something that all healthcare providers should aim for. By integrating such practices in the healthcare environment, nurses along with other healthcare providers have the potential to make all care patient centered and patient
