In order for a group to work well together, a good, determined leader is what is needed in or to succeed. When it comes to leadership, not everybody expresses it the same. There are three major categories that leadership can fall under, those being: authoritarian, participative, and delegative. Authoritarian leadership is a type of leadership where one person dictates all the decisions and prefers not to delegate any responsibilities to subordinates. Individuals who are an authoritarian leader typically make choices based on their own ideas or judgements, and rarely accept advice from followers, due to a lack of confidence in their subordinates. In addition, authoritarian leaders dictate all the work methods and processes, and group leader rarely trusts group members with decisions or important tasks. Consequently, autocratic leaders may also micromanage, which is where a manager closely observes or controls the work of subordinates. In fact, participatory leaders are interested in their subordinates work, but do not micromanage. They understand that their workers need their space in order to do their best work, but make it known that if they need a consultant, they are willing to help. Participatory leadership is an effective way of managing a group because it allows everyone to have a say, which makes people feel empowered. For example, if colleagues are in a meeting, pitching ideas for a new, updated crisis management assessment, the leader of the group could encourage his subordinates to put forth their opinion about the crisis management assessment and share their opinions to increase the likelihood of
