Today, I will be introducing the different types of leadership used in the public services to you, before comparing and contrasting them.
Different leadership styles require different characteristic traits which can be needed in certain fields of public services.
The first leadership style I will be talking about is the authoritarian. An authoritarian makes decisions independently, which can cause low morale in the group because their opinions are not being heard. Authoritarians instruct their group clearly, this keeps the troops focused and understanding of the task. The authoritarian leadership style would be used by a commanding officer in the army. The leadership qualities needed include: assertiveness, disciplined and decisiveness.
Another leadership style used in the public services would be the task orientated style. A task orientated leader is focused on getting the task done whatever it costs. This can cause difficulties in completing the task as the group can become unmotivated. The task orientated style would be used in the fire service or the paramedics. The leader must be very determined to get the task completed. This is similar to the authoritarian approach as both of the styles require the leader to be decisive to come to a decision without input.

The democratic style allows input from both the leader and their team before making a decision. This is good because it gets people communicating their ideas, giving options and some responsibility. This style can also be bad because there could be too many ideas being suggested that it can be a while before they make a decision which could be costly in the public services.
