Papa John's Controversy

However, there was a threat to Papa John’s market share due to a controversy regarding its claim to use fresh ingredients only. An investigation into the company’s claim of better ingredients and better pizza by a journalist yielded the company’s lack of clarity in disclosing nutritional information for the products on their menu (Warner, 2013). The jury agreed with Pizza Hut’s argument that Papa John’s slogan of Better Ingredients Better Pizza was false or misleading, leading for them to be awarded $467,619 in damages (USA Today,

In addition, according to Pollan the best way to choose healthy and wholesome food products is to avoid foods with labels that make health claims. Pollan says, “For a food product to make health claims on its package it must first have a package, so right off the bat it’s more likely to be a processed food than a whole food”(14). Pollan’s food principles advocates for minimum consumption of processed foods and products that make health claims are processed foods. The article by David H. Freedman titled “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”, is about how a lot of people think that junk food, or processed food, is the reason for the obesity problem when it really is not. Freedman makes the claim that junk food is not the only problem because even most wholesome food has as much or even more fat and calories as processed food and he gives different examples that prove this claim throughout his article. This claim is a claim of policy because he wants his audience to understand that junk food is not the only problem and that wholesome food is just as bad, but eating junk food in moderation can go a long way. The warrant that he uses to support this claim is that there is no evidence that processed food is actually…

Some suggest that if healthier food choices and more nutrient information were available to consumers of fast-food then one could fight obesity more effectively. In his essay Zinczenko challenges readers by instructing them to “take a drive down any thoroughfare in America and I guarantee that you’ll see one of our country’s more than 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants” (392). Zinczenko believes that the lack of healthy and easily accessible alternatives contribute to the obesity epidemic. Zinczenko then makes the argument that some food labeling is misleading about the product by stating that “Complicating the lack of alternatives is the lack of information about what exactly, we’re consuming. There are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging, the way there are on grocery items.…

California Resident, Amanda Obney, initiated the allegations against Taco Bell’s advertising and labeling, stipulating that the context led her to believe that Taco Bell’s meat filling was that of seasoned ground beef (Roper, Samikkannu, & O’Rourke, 2011). Within the context of the initial allegations, specific concerns were expressed in that Taco Bell misrepresented certain ingredients as “seasonings”, when in fact, the ingredients were added to increase the volume of the product, referred to as “binders” and “extenders”, rather than to add flavor (Roper, Samikkannu, & O’Rourke, 2011). Furthermore, the lawsuit noted that internally, Taco Bell referred to the product as “seasoned ground beef” and its “seasoned beef” as “taco meat filling” (Roper, Samikkannu, & O’Rourke, 2011).…
